Where #BodyPositivity Goes Wrong - Dee Gautham

I generally support #bodypositivity but sometimes feel like it exacerbates the deeper issue at hand which is that we‘re still placing appearance as the ultimate definition of female value – whether our appearance is big or small or curvy or skinny, we’re still focused on “being beautiful all the time”
.
Fixating on “You’re beautiful at all sizes” still sends the message that beauty is the biggest thing we need to focus on, when instead we should be sending women the message that “Your appearance is not the thing that defines you.” Telling women to “love the way you look no matter what!” just adds even more obsession on appearances and takes away the real value of a woman.
.
In reality you don’t need to LOVE your appearance all the time. Sometimes I’m just neutral about my appearance (aka when I’m on my period 😂) and that’s perfectly fine. Because I know I am more than my appearance, and there is no need to obsess over it or hate it constantly.
.
Unfortunately our culture is obsessed with women’s bodies, and Instagram and the rise of visual based media has made it easier than ever to judge women based on a few surface level pixels we see on a screen. I am terrified of the body image issues my kids are going to have growing up in an increasingly surface-based society that is so fixated on looks.
.
Obviously I run my business on Instagram and there’s so much value to the platform. But, I hope that with my captions you also see me as more than a body, more than pixels, that you are inspired by my brain & personality over my body.
.
If you struggle w/ body image, I want you to start thinking this way:
.
✨Your body is an instrument, not an ornament.
✨It exists for you to thrive in your best life, it doesn’t exist for the viewing pleasure of those around you.
✨It’s a paintbrush for your life, but not the canvas.
.
Yes – you want your instrument to feel good, be in good shape, but the ultimate goal is that you don’t obsess and that it’s an incredible tool to take you through life.
.
Do you agree?👇👇

I talk more on my stories about this last night and why we need to stop obsessing about “loving our bodies” all the time. Check it out & tell me what you think!!
