Intuitive Eating 101 - Dee Gautham

Have you ever seen a toddler eat? They know what to eat and know when to stop. We have built-in cues that tell us when to stop eating when we’re full. If we actually follow them (and balance our nutrition), our bodies and minds WILL look and feel amazing… and you’ll actually be able to ENJOY FOOD INSTEAD OF FEARING it. ❤️ You’ll also feel more in control of our thoughts, and emotions, and not let the food thoughts have so much POWER over you.
.
Problem is, our internal cues around food have been SO over-riden in our modern day society from (1) Excessive dieting (2) Increasing portion sizes, (3) Social pressures to eat, and (4) Using food to cope with boredom/ stress/ emotions… 👉That as adults, most of us are SUPER disconnected from our bodies and we eat mostly based on external cues. External cues include things like following a pre-planned diet plan, planned macros for the day, eating because everyone else is eating, or EVEN eating to avoid social awkwardness. (😂Which I am very guilty of). EVEN using “diet tricks” like eating from a smaller plate to “trick your brain” into thinking it’s getting enough is an external cue.
.
This being said: I DO think tracking macros can be effective to LEARN about nutrition, and this is what I coach beginners on, but at the end of the day you have to be able to also listen to your body.
.
I am also not saying you have to eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full at EVERY meal – There are definitely times where I order dessert even when I”m full because it sounds good, BUT, start by having a general AWARENESS off why you’re eating.
.
If you’ve been eating with external cues for a while, listening to your body can be difficult. It will take several tries to really be in touch with your hunger/fullness cues but you’ll eventually get there.
.

NOTE – Macros are not the enemy. Calorie / macro tracking can be a very useful skill to learn how to balance out your nutritional needs, achieve fat loss, and/or connect back to your internal signals.
